PURPOSE: To improve display performance by storing and reading various map data in the lump for each unit block in the map processing system and to attain high speed scrolling by applying advance-reading to surrounding areas upon the request of scrolling display.

CONSTITUTION: The system is made up of an image data input section A1, a vector data input section B1, an,image data processing section A2, a vector data processing section B2, a map data storage processing section C1, a map data storage section C2, a map data display processing section D, a high speed memory E, and a map display device H. Various map data entered from the sections A1, B1 are divided into unit blocks and various type data such as a vector and an image are stored in the lump for each divided unit block. The data in the integrated unit block receive a retrieval key and the resulting data are stored in a file. In the case of displaying a map, the required area is read in terms of the divided unit areas and then the result is displayed.
