PURPOSE: To obtain a material for the outer layer of a composite roll having superior seizing and wear resistances by using a steel having a specified composition.

CONSTITUTION: The composition of a material for the outer layer of a composite roll is composed of, by weight, 1W2% C, 0.2W2% Si, 0.5W1.5% Mn, <3% Ni, 2W5% Cr, 3W10% Mo, <4% V, 0.1W0.6% S and the balance Fe. The material is melted and charged into a casting mold for centrifugal casting to form an outer layer by centrifugal casting. The casting mold is stood upright or obliquely, and a molten metal for an inner layer such as molten spheroidal graphite cast iron is charged into the mold having the outer layer to form an inner layer. Since the outer and inner layers are integrated, a composite roll is manufactured.
