To obtain a medicine that can manifest excellent differentiation promotion of nerve cells with toxicity lowered and is useful as an antidimentia, nerve cell protector and for treatment of peripheral neuropathy due to diabetes and the like.
As an active ingredient, is used a compound of formula I [X is O, S, SO, SO2, NH, Y is a (substituted) 1-6C hydrocarbon residue having a molecular weight of 15-400 as the whole group, where in the case that the residue is cyclic, this cycle residue may contain 1 or 2 heteroatoms; Z is carboxyl or a group derived therefrom, a (substituted) 1-4C aliphatic hydrocarbon residue] or its salt, typically trans-3-acetoxymethyl-2-[2,3-bis(hydroxy)propylthio]- methylcyclopentanone. The compound of formula I is prepared by reaction of a compound of formula II (Z' is Z) with a compound of formula III (X2 is S, O, NH).
