To obtain a composition capable of economically and efficiently giving fibers, films, sheets, foams, molded articles employed in uniaxial or biaxial stretch processes by incorporating a starch having a specific wt. average mol.wt. and a high polymer substantially compatible with the starch and having a specific wt. average mol.wt. each in a specific amount.
There is provided a melt processable starch composition comprising about 20 to about 99.99 wt.% of a starch, about 0.001 to about 10 wt.% of a high polymer and the balance of an additive, which composition being prepared by processes comprising a step to supply a starch having a wt. average mol.wt. of about 1,000 to about 2,000,000, a step to supply a high polymer substantially compatible with the starch and having a wt. average mol.wt. of at least 500,000 and preferably a step to supply at least one additive selected among a hydroxyl plasticizer having at least one hydroxyl group, a hydroxyl- free plasticizer, a diluent and a mixture thereof, and a step to mix together the starch, the high polymer and the additive.
