The mercury discharge device for introducing a small amount of mercury into a fluorescent lamp is formed of a metallic container, such that at least houses powder of a mercury discharge compound selected from among an intermetallic compounds TixZryHgz, of which x and y are in the range 0 to 13, the total (x+y) is in the range 3 to 13, and z is 1 or 2, and can hold the powder particles of the mercury discharge compound, even though it is not closed completely. The mercury discharge device includes three openings of one slit and others on both ends of the device.
