PURPOSE: To easily obtain a metal bromide or metal oxide bromide under a relatively mild condition by allowing a metal oxide to react with carbonyl dibromide at an increased temp.
CONSTITUTION: The metal bromide or the metal oxide bromide is obtained by allowing the metal oxide to react with carbonyl dibromide preferably at a higher temp. than 100°C. The method is particularly useful as a method for producing a transition metal bromide or a transition metal oxide bromide from a transition metal oxide. Specific examples of the transition metal include vanadium, molybdenum, rhenium, samarium and lanthanoid. In such a case, excess carbonyl dibromide, for example, ≥7 mol carbonyl dibromide per 1 mol metal oxide is adequately used and the reaction is performed in a pressure vessel.
