Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prolong the cycle life of a hydrogen storage alloy by substituting a part of Co in the alloy with Fe and Cu in an alkaline battery formed of an anode made of the hydrogen storage alloy material.
SOLUTION: In a metal oxide-metal halide type alkaline battery formed of metal oxide-containing cathode and an anode made of a hydrogen storage alloy material having a CaCu5 type crystal structure, the alloy composition is set to be MmNiuAlwMnxCoyMz. In the formula, Mm stands for a misch metal, M for Fe or Cu, the parameters x, z, y, and w satisfy the following: 0.2≤x≤0.4, 0.1≤z≤0.4, 0.2≤y≤0.4, 0.3≤w≤0.5, 4.9≤u+w+x+y+z≤5.1, and Mm contains 20-60 wt.%, preferably 40-60 wt.%, of La and the balance Ce. Since the defined alloy of which a part of Co is substituted with Fe and/or Cu is used as an anode, the cycle life of the resultant battery is prolonged.
