To suppress missing or drop out of magnetic layer due to splash at the time of deposition by desulfurizing a magnetic material having high content of sulfur thereby decreasing the content of sulfur to a specified value or below.
A magnetic material tar metal thin film magnetic recording medium containing sulfur by 20ppm or more is desulfurized at the time of vacuum dissolution by adding a desulfurization agent to prepare a magnetic material containing sulfur by 20ppm or less. This material can suppress missing or drop out of magnetic layer due to splash at the time of deposition. For example, a magnetic material of 99% Co is desulfurized using carbon in an alloy material dissolved at the time of vacuum dissolution and cooled temporarily before cutting off scale adhering to the surface of the magnetic material by machining. It is subjected again to vacuum dissolution where desulfurization is performed by throwing in a mixture of equal quantity of CAF2 and CaO. According to the method characteristics equivalent to the case employing Co 99.9% material are attained and the cost is reduced significantly.
