This metallic catalyst has a hollowly formed body and preferably a hollow sphere. This catalyst particle has 0.5-20 mm diameter and 0.1-5 mm wall thickness. The jacket of the catalyst particle is impermeable or has up to 80% open porosity and consists of various layers and/or layered metals. The metallic catalyst of a hollow sphere shape shows high activity in general. The production method of this metallic catalyst comprises spraying of metallic powder, optionally together with a binder, onto a formed body made of an inflammable material, i.e., polystyrene foam (styrofoam) and burning the inflammable material to obtain a hollow body. As one kind of the metallic powder, an alloy to be rapidly cooled or an alloy to be slowly cooled is used. The alloy comprises one or more catalyst metals such as nickel, an alkali-soluble component such as aluminum and one or more co-catalyst elements such as Cr.
