Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glass fiber, when being dispersed into a plastic material, capable of imparting strength reinforcement to the plastic material and the imparting of electromagnetic shielding properties to the plastic material.SOLUTION: Provided is a metal-covered glass fiber comprising: a glass fiber; and a metal covering covered to the whole of the outer circumferential face of the glass fiber, in which the thickness of the metal covering is 0.3 to 1.5 μm, and the metal covering in the metal-covered glass fiber being 0.7 to 84 vol.%. The covering fiber can be obtained by a method for producing a metal-covered glass fiber where the glass fiber pulled out from a bushing nozzle in a glass melting furnace is contacted with a metal fused liquid oozed out from the hole part of the melting furnace for metal for forming a metal covering, in which the metal fused liquid oozed out from the hole part is made into dome-shaped droplets, and, upon the contact of the glass fiber into the droplets, the glass fiber is pressed against the central direction of the droplets.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
