A method for the production of temporarily crosslinked cellulose ethers which can be stirred into aqueous solutions without forming lumps and with delayed onset of swelling, involves mixing cellulose ethers containing free hydroxyl groups (I) with compounds containing aldehyde group(s) and acid group(s) which are then reacted with the free OH groups.
