PURPOSE: To alkylate an arom. hydrocarbon by bringing this hydrocarbon and an olefin alkylating agent into reaction in the presence of a catalyst composite contg. porous crystalline silicate ZSM-5 and having a specific α value and diffusion rate constant of crystals.
CONSTITUTION: The arom. hydrocarbon raw material (e.g.; benzene) and the olefinic hydrocarbon alkylating agent (e.g.; ethylene) are brought into reaction in the presence of the catalyst composite contg. the porous crystalline silicate ZSM-5 and having the α value of ≤100 and the diffusion rate constant of the crystals at least 100/second (more preferably the α value of 30 to 65 and diffusion constant of 200/second) under an atm. pressure to 2790 kPa (more particularly 316 to 454°C, 276 to 3210 kPa), by which the useful alkylate, such as ethyl benzene, is obtd. while the amt. of the o-xylene to be produced is minimized. The catalyst composite is capable of maintaining activity for a long period of time and consists of, for example, 50 to 5wt.% porous crystalline silicate and an inorg. oxide binder (e.g.: alumina).
