To provide a method and apparatus for carbonizing refuse which shows a stable combustion performance irrespective of the amount or type of refuse charged and can be used for carbonizing refuse in a short time.
This refuse carbonization apparatus comprises a carbonization chamber, a first combustion chamber having a first burner, a second combustion chamber having a second burner, and a chimney. The carbonization chamber and the second combustion chamber have their temperature-measuring devices. After the operation of the apparatus is started, the heating power of the first burner is enhanced until the temperature of the second combustion chamber reaches T1 so that the temp. of the carbonization chamber is kept at a temperature θ1 which is higher than a specified value θ. The apparatus is then operated so that the temp. of the carbonization chamber is kept at the specified value θuntil the temp. of the second combustion chamber reaches its peak and goes down to below a certain value T2. Then, the heating power of the first burner is enhanced so that the temperature of the carbonization chamber is kept at a temperature θ2 which is higher than the specified value θ until the completion of carbonization.
