To increase the speed of cutting-off a wire member in a definite length by reducing loss of time when performing the cutting-off operation by gripping the tip end of the wire member and performing the reciprocating motion in the definite length.
The tip end portion of the wire member C is held by a front chuck 1. The front chuck 1 is moved forward by the half of the cutting-off length L1 of the wire member C, and a cutter 2 and a rear chuck 3 are moved backward by the same distance as that of the front chuck 1. After the rear chuck 3 has gripped the wire member C and the chucks 4, 5 of a receiving apparatus have gripped the wire member C, the wire member C is cut-off by means of the cutter 2. After the cutter 2 has been withdrawn and the gripping allowance for the front chuck 1 has been secured, the front chuck 1, the cutter 2, and the rear chuck 3 are returned to their initial positions.
