Abstract:

PURPOSE: To prevent inhalation of a corrosive nuclide and reduce generation of NOx by shielding flames of a fuel-enriched oxy-fuel inside an envelope of flames of oxygen-enriched oxy-fuel by flames, and confining the shielded flames along a passage having a predetermined cross sectional area.

CONSTITUTION: A flame 47 is comprised of a core 48 of a mixture of fuel- enriched oxy-fuel surrounded by an envelope of an oxygen-enriched mixture. With respect to the dimension of a preliminary combustor 52, the length from a burner surface 44 to an emission outlet of the preliminary combustor 52 is 6 to 48 inches and the diameter of an internal cylinder opening of the preliminary combustor 52 is 2 to 8 inches provided that a burner 40 can perform combustion at 0.25 to 40 million Btu/hour. In this manner, generated flames of the oxy-fuel is confined in the preliminary combustor 52, and the effect of low-temperature bright flames with lowered NOx generation is achieved, to thereby eliminate introduction of poisonous furnace contaminants into the nozzle, the burner block, or the preliminary combustor.
