To provide both a method and an apparatus for inserting a complicated ground pattern into a carpet base fabric without reducing a machine speed.

In this method for producing a carpet by moving a carpet base fabric 1 in a fixed direction, vertically moving a needle 3 and inserting a carpet yarn 2 into the carpet yarn 1, a ground pattern is formed by changing a case in which the carpet base fabric 1 which is advancing synchronously with the vertical movement of the needle 3 is reciprocated in a direction perpendicular to the advance direction of the carpet base fabric 1 and the carpet yarn 2 is inserted into the carpet base fabric to a case in which the needle 3 is vertically moved and the carpet yarn 2 is inserted into the advancing carpet base fabric 1.
