To provide a method and an apparatus for treating a waste gas of a coke oven capable of preventing an aromatic compound such as benzene contained in the waste gas which flows out from a charging opening of the coke oven from being diffused into the atmosphere at the time of charging the coal.

The method for treating the waste gas of the coke oven comprises the steps of mixing the waste gas flowing out from the charging opening of a carbonizing chamber of the coke oven with a waste gas for heating, heating it, thereafter removing almost entire dust in the waste gas and at least one part of the aromatic compound with a dust collector of a bag filter type, and thereafter absorbing to remove the rest of the aromatic compound in the waste gas with an active carbon filled layer. The apparatus for treating the waste gas of the coke oven comprises a means for collecting a coke oven gas, a dust collector of a bag filter type, an active carbon absorbing tower, and a gas flow path from a flue of the coke oven to the upstream side of the dust collector of the bag filter type.
