To improve the consistency of a printing preview and real printed matter.

The method is for viewing document data representing at least part of a document to be printed on the client side, and includes: a step of transferring the document to be printed from the client to a print server; a step of converting at the print server the document to be printed into document data; and a step of transferring the document data from the print server to the client. The document data are at least part of a raster image file obtained by a raster conversion function and the raster conversion function is used to print the document. In an apparatus comprising a print server provided with a controller for converting the document to be printed into document data and a client computer connected through a network, the controller comprises a raster conversion function generating for the document data a raster image file, and the raster conversion function is used to print the document at least on one print engine.
