To provide a method for controlling an automatic transmission capable of matching the shift characteristics of the transmission to the image of the operator.
When an intervention by the operator is performed by a prediction, the features of a forthcoming route are loaded from a database to a buffer memory by a transmission control part, variables describing the traveling state of a car and the intervention by the operator are recorded in the buffer memory before and after the time of the intervention and during a time corresponding to the operating time of a FIFO buffer, and retrieves special characteristics of the route in the buffer memory. When the special characteristics of the route are present, input data for a shift logic is calculated and a classification system for the intervention is matched to the characteristics requested by the operator. When the special characteristics of the route are not present, the intervention by the operator is rejected.
