PURPOSE: To provide a control method for molten slag surface level in an elec tric slag remelting device by detecting the molten slag surface with simple equipment to keep the molten slag surface at specified position.

CONSTITUTION: This method features so that the molten slag surface in a water- cooled mold 1 in electric slag remelting device is detected by a sensor 12 made of feat resistant electric conductive material arranged at a prescribed position near the mold well. The drawing speed of ingot 11 is controlled in accordance with the obtd. detection information, thereby the molten slag surface is kept at the specified position.
