PURPOSE: To enable the copolymn. of ethylene and acrylonitrile while obtaining a low-viscosity product and simultaneously avoiding the danger of an excess dose of an initiator accompanied by the risk of an explosive shock by copolymerizing those monomers under the influence of a laser beam.
CONSTITUTION: The copolymn. of 20-90 wt.%, pref. 40-70 wt.%, ethylene and 10-80 wt.%, pref. 30-60 wt.%, acrylonitrile (up to 20 mol% of acrylonitrile may be replaced by other monomers having at least one copolymerizable C=C double bond) is conducted under the influence of a laser beam. Until now, the production of an ethylene/acrylonitrile copolymer is achieved only by using a large amt. of an initiator; hence there is a temporary danger of an excess dose of the initiator accompanied by the risk an explosive shock and only a product with a very high viscosity is obtd. Such difficulties are overcome by using a laser beam.
