Title:
METHOD FOR CULTIVATING ALGAL BODY OF GENUS EUGLENA WITH HIGH VITAMIN E CONTENT
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS59205976
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To increase the vitamin E content in an algal body in cultivating an alga of the genus Euglena having the biosynthetic ability of tocopherol in a culture medium to produce the algal body containing the vitamin E, by adding a specific organic compound to the culture medium.

CONSTITUTION: One or more organic compounds selected from shikimic acid, prephenic acid, chorismic acid, phenylpyruvic acid, L-phenylalanine, L-tyrosine, p-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid, homogentisic acid and homoarbutin are added to a nutrient culture medium consisting of a carbon source, nitrogen source, inorganic salts, etc. The amount of the organic compounds to be added is suitably about 0.01W2%. An alga of the genus Euglena, e.g. Euglena gracilis Z strain or Euglena viridis, having the biosynthetic ability of tocopherol is cultivated in the resultant culture medium to give the aimed algal body of the genus Euglena containing vitamin E useful as a health drug in a high concentration.
