Abstract:

To provide a method for decomposing ester oligomers (high boiling compounds) containing succinic acid and/or 4-hydroxybutyric acid and 1,4-butane diol as their constituting components, especially the high boiling compounds (the ester oligomers) produced as byproducts in the method for producing γ-butyrolactone, and further an industrially advantageous method for producing the group of 4C products, especially a method for producing the γ-butyrolactone.

This method for decomposing the ester oligomers is provided by bringing an aqueous solution of the ester oligomers containing succinic acid and/or 4-hydroxybutyric acid and 1,4-butane diol as their constituting components in contact with a solid acid catalyst under heating to decompose to each of their various constituting components, also converting 1,4-butane diol to tetrahydrofuran and/or converting the 4-hydroxy butyric acid to the γ-butyrolactone in the case of containing the 4-hydroxybutyric acid as the constituting component of the ester oligomers.
