To specifically cleave a β-aryl ether bond, a principal intramolecular bond of lignin, and convert lignin to industrially usable low-molecular weight compounds by treating lignin using lignin-decomposing mold (except basidiomycetes).
Lignin is treated by using lignin-decomposing molds (except basidiomycetes), preferably Trichoderma.sp f5053 strain (FERM P-1725), Arthrinium.sp f5518 strain (FERN P-), Humicola.sp f5342 strain (FERM P=17252), the mold f5520 strain (FERM P-17254), the mold 2BW-1 strain (FERM P-17266) or the likes. Partially decomposed lignin is usable for, e.g. perfume components for foods, synthetic raw materials for insecticides, intermediates for synthesizing medicaments, ripening accelerators for fruits, antifoaming agents for oils, vulcanization inhibitors, etc.
