PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for decomposing an organohalogen compound, comprising dehalogenating the organohalogen compound such as polychlorinated biphenyl contained in electric insulating oils, heating media, organic drainages, and the like to decompose the organohalogen compound, by which the decomposition treatment can be performed without generating a large quantity of the drainage and without needing a drainage treatment such as a biological treatment or an activated carbon adsorption treatment, thereby in a largely cost- reduced state for the post treatments, and the like.
SOLUTION: This method for decomposing the organohalogen compound, comprising dehalogenating the organic halogen compound with an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal, characterized by adding water in an amount of 1.0 to 1.2 moles per mole of the residual alkali metal or in an amount of 2.0 to 2.4 moles per mole of the residual alkaline earth metal to change the residual alkali metal or alkaline earth metal into its hydroxide, after the dehalogenation treatment. The other characteristic comprises subjecting the water-added treated product to an oil-water separation treatment, recovering an alcohol and the water from the separated water layer, and then recycling the recovered alcohol and water.
