PURPOSE: To perform uniform polishing finish of a metallic foil, e.g. a stainless steel foil, by a method wherein a billy role to bring a metallic foil under continuous movement into pressure contact with the peripheral surface of a resilient wheel is mounted to the wheel formed by molding a non-woven cloth to which grinding grains are securely adhered.
CONSTITUTION: At least two polishing stands 13 are positioned between an uncoiler 16 and a coiler 18. In each polishing stand 13, a resilient wheel 14 formed by molding a non-woven cloth to which grinding grains are secured is rotated at a speed enoughly higher than the moving speed of a metallic foil 15 through the working of a rotational drive mechanism. The metallic foil 15 is forced into pressure contact with the resilient wheel 14 under rotation by means of a billy roll 19. Resultant from the pressure contact, the length of a contact are between the resilient wheel 14 and the flattened metallic foil 15 is increased and a contact area therebetween is increased, and a contact pressure is reduced. As a result, a continuous polishing grain is formed on the metallic foil 15 by means of the resilient wheel 14, and polishing finish is applied on the metallic foil 15 uniformly in the direction of width.
