PURPOSE: To measure a fault with high accuracy by only scanning on a member to be detected by irradiating and scanning with a pencil beam type ultrasonic signal, and simultaneously, inputting a scanning distance from a position detecting sensor and obtaining fault data.
CONSTITUTION: A pencil beam type ultrasonic signal emitted from an ultrasonic sensor 10 becomes an echo reflected by the surface of a member to be detected 24 and an echo reflected by the reverse side and inputted to an ultrasonic measuring instrument 14, and from the time between both the echoes, thickness is calculated and inputted to a computer 18. A position detecting sensor 12 in a hand sensor 26 outputs a pulse signal corresponding to a running moving distance of the ultrasonic sensor 10, and in accordance with this position pulse signal, thickness data calculated by the ultrasonic measuring instrument 14 is outputted, and a plate thickness value of the member to be detected 24 at every scanning position is inputted to the computer 18, and outputted and displayed as an image signal on a CRT 32.
