PURPOSE: To form glass having a stable plate thickness without devitrification by supplying fused glass through a slit provided in the lower part of a melting tank onto a fluid control body maintained at a high temp. and allowing the fused glass to flow downward under heating.
CONSTITUTION: A fluid control body 4 formed by coating the outside of a hollow cylindrical heating element 5 connected via a terminal 9 to a constant current power source with an alumina tube 6, attaching a wedge-shaped refractory brick 7 to the lower part thereof and coating the tube 6 and the brick 7 with a thin platinum plate 8b is attached under a horizontal slit 3 provided in the bottom of a melting tank 1. The fused glass stock 2 which is made uniform and is defoamed in the tank 1 is supplied through the slit 3 onto the body 4 and is allowed to flow downward along both side surfaces of the body 4 under heating. The flowing down glass is joined in the lower part of the body 4 to form a glass plate 11 and thereafter both ends are nipped by knurling rolls 14 and the glass plate is conducted to a cooling section 12 where the glass plate is cooled. The cooled glass plate is pulled downward by pull rolls 15.
