To efficiently obtain a writing frame on a print formed of each image having different direction and format by deciding the direction of each image of a film, selecting a common edge part with reference to several images and masking at least one corresponding edge part of a print gate for a photographic printing paper and illuminating each image at the print gate.
Because of a horizontal operation, masks 96 and 98 are supported on a pair of guide rails 100 to 104. This device is provided with a pair of linear actuators 106 and 108 for moving the masks 96 and 98 so as to mask the frame part of each image printed on the photographic printing paper 74. The masks 96 and 98 can be moved forward by the actuators 106 and 108 so as to provide a large, or small writing frame. This method is suitable to provide the writing frame on the base edge part of a panoramic, or HDTV system print, in the case the image faces upward.
