The core fibers f,... of both multiple optical fibers F, F to be connected are placed opposite to each other on a fiber holder 30 and fusion spliced by a pair of discharging electrodes 10, 20 in this method. In this case, an interval between the pair of discharging electrodes 10, 20 is properly varied in accordance with the number of coated optical fibers in the multiple optical fibers. By the variation of the inter-electrode interval, the optimum electric discharge passage corresponding to the number of coated optical fibers is formed, and improved fusion splicing can be obtained.
