PURPOSE: To improve the quality of tracking error information by recording a pilot signal for tracking which is superposed on an information signal on a circular arc shaped track and comparing the reproduced frequency of the pilot signal with the frequency at the time of recording.

CONSTITUTION: Recording is performed on a magnetic tape by a rotating head so that a recording track becomes the circular arc shape and the pilot signal for tracking is superposed and recorded with the information signal which is recorded or the modulation with the specified frequency component is performed to the information signal which is recorded. Next, at the time of reproducing, the information signal is reproduced by a reproducing signal processing circuit 8 and the pilot signal is extracted from the reproducing signal through a band pass filter(BPF) 4. Then, in a frequency- voltage conversion circuit(FV) 5, the output therefrom is taken as a center value when the frequency is the frequency at the time of recording and the voltage in accordance with the deviation quantity is generated when the frequency is not the frequency at the time of recording. Based on frequency information converted into voltage, a feeding motor speed control circuit 6 modulates the speed of a feeding motor 7 and performs the performs the feeding action so that a magnetic head 2 may execute tracking.
