METHOD AND DEVICE FOR PREPARING TEXT USED IN TEXT PROCESSING SYSTEM

PURPOSE: To produce a text of a language which has more than 256 characters such 'as the Chinese and Japanese languages, etc., by collecting input stream of characters showing a prescribed language, dividing these streams into plural word groups and mapping these word groups to a unique string of single-byte characters which can be supplied to a selected text processing system.
CONSTITUTION: An additional 'translation filter' 52, is added between a foreign language document text 50 and an indexing engine filter' 42. The filter 52 uses a special 'large-width character' function in order to process each character in two bytes regardless of presence or absence of English. Then the filter 52 decides the boundaries of words, decomposes a compound word if exists and inserts a special English equivalent word into a Japanese character stream before finally mapping a hex (hexadecimal) stream to an ASCII (single byte) stream. Thereafter, the ASCII stream is supplied to a 'normal' filter 42.
