PURPOSE: To provide a pattern recognizing device for making comparison possible with a reference pattern in a short period of time even when objective characters or symbols are increased concerning the method and device for recognizing pattern to compare a pattern to be identified segmented from an image with the reference pattern and to identify that pattern.
CONSTITUTION: One synthetic pattern 3 is formed by overlapping plural reference patterns corresponding to each picture element 31 arranged in a matrix shaped manner, a storage area 41 provided in a storage device and corresponding to the respective picture elements 31 of the synthetic pattern 3 composes of plural bits 42, the respective bits 42 of the storage area 41 are allocated to the picture elements of respectively different reference patterns in the case of storing the synthetic pattern 3, and the binarized signal of the pattern to be identified is compared with the signal stored in the bit 42 at every picture element.
