Abstract:

PURPOSE: To highly disperse a solid additive in a synthetic polymer without detriment to the mechanical properties of the resulting article by mixing a mixture comprising the additive and a fluid with a thermoplastic synthetic polymer soln. while simultaneously removing the fluid and the solvent of the soln.

CONSTITUTION: A mixture comprising a fluid and a solid additive selected from among a filler, an auxiliary matting agent, an impact modifier, an antistatic agent, an antioxidant, a plasticizer, a flow accelerator, a stabilizer, a colorant, a mold lubricant, a flame retardant, and an ultraviolet-screening agent and a thermoplastic synthetic polymer soln. with a concn. of 1-25 wt.% are introduced from pressure vessels 10 and 12 through a flowmeter 15 and a meter 16 into a tubular mixer 14, mixed by a multielement static mixer 18, and introduced into a steam precipitation nozzle 20, where the solvent of the polymer soln. and the fluid are evaporated with a high- pressure steam supplied by a superheated steam source 21 and simultaneously particles of both the synthetic polymer and the additive are coprecipitated in a conduit 22. The particles are then separated from the fluid and the solvent with a cyclon separator 26.
