Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refining method by which aluminum containing, as impurities, Fe, Si, peritectic elements and other inevitably contained elements can be efficiently refined on an industrial scale.
SOLUTION: This method includes the following steps: a peritectic-substance- separating step where metallic B is added to molten raw material and then oxidizing- gas-containing gas is blown to apply flotation separation to the peritectic elements or compounds thereof; a crystal-packing step where the molten metal is held in a holding vessel and the outer periphery in the vicinity of the upper part of the vessel is cooled to crystallize primary crystals of aluminum on the inner periphery of the holding vessel, and further, the primary crystals are peeled off by physical means from the inner periphery of the vessel and allowed to deposit on the bottom of the vessel, and then, the deposited primary crystals are made to press together uniformly over the whole surface of the inner-peripheral cross section of the vessel to perform crystal growth and pack up the above crystals compactly into the vessel; and a nonperitectic-substance-discharging step where the vessel packed with the crystals is tilted to apply gravity separation to the mother liquor containing nonperitectic substances.
