Abstract:
To provide a method of evaluating a size of a relatively large non-metallic inclusion that frequently exists in steel and an interface status between the non-metallic inclusion and its surrounding matrix quickly, at low-cost and accurately.SOLUTION: A method includes steps of: taking a test piece having a dangerous volume of 400 mm3 or more from steel for evaluation; after charging the test piece with hydrogen, applying a stress by ultrasonic vibration to the test piece to break it; identifying the largest non-metallic inclusion that appeared near a fracture origin on a fracture surface of the test piece; measuring the size of the inclusion; identifying a falling trace of the largest inclusion on a fracture surface on the opposing side of the fracture surface; measuring a projection shape of the non-metal inclusion on one of the specified fracture surface pair; measuring a recess shape on the falling trace side of the non-metal inclusion remaining on the other fracture surface; using a difference detected by collating the size of the largest non-metal inclusion, the projection shape and the recess shape; and evaluating the size of the non-metal inclusion in steel and an interface status between the inclusion and the surrounding matrix.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
