To provide a method for forming image on an ink jet recording material which has good ink absorbability, flaw resistance, guillotine cutting flaw properties and glossiness and excellent light resistance, indoor fade resistance and water resistance.

The method for forming the image on the ink jet recording material comprises the steps of laminating an ink accepting layer containing inorganic fine particles and a hydrophilic binder and an overcoating layer containing a colloidal silica on at least one surface of a water resistant support in the recording material, forming the image on the surface of the overcoating layer, and providing a transparent resin protective layer on the image forming surface. Particularly as the colloidal silica of the overcoating layer, one having a mean primary particle size of 30 nm or more is used.
