Regarding the method for forming metal nanoparticles in a medium, a medium comprising: a parent radical precursor capable of forming a parent radical by being excited by exciting light; a child radical precursor capable of forming a child radical by being reacted with the excited state of the parent radical precursor; and a metal ion or a metal complex is irradiated with exciting light. Further, regarding a method for producing a material in which metal nanoparticles are formed in a medium, a medium comprising: a parent radical precursor capable of forming a parent radical by being excited by exciting light; a child radical precursor capable of forming a child radical by being reacted with the excited state of the parent radical precursor; and a metal ion or a metal complex is irradiated with exciting light.
