Abstract:

To provide a method for hardening the surfaces of cutting tools and metallic materials high in hardness, in which the depth of hardened layers is high, enbrittlement is prevented and broken-edge or the like are hard to occur.

The estimated part to form into an edge part 6 is melted by arc in a shield gas contg. 7 to 25 vol.% reactive gas and is thereafter solidified to allow solute atoms to enter into the edge part 6. By the solid solution strengthening, the edge part 6 is hardened. Since the ratio of the reactive gas is regulated to ≤25 vol.%, coarsened dendrite is not present on the edge part 6, and the toughness of the edge part 6 is maintained. Thus, it is applicable even to a cutting tool 5 sharp in the edge.
