PURPOSE: To enable gas which is hardly ignited to be ignited stably over a wide temperature range from its low temperature to its high temperature by a method wherein the combustible gas is ignited with catalyst being present therein.
CONSTITUTION: Catalyst carrying paradium of active substance at a carrier coated with complex oxide composed of single alumina, silica, titania, zirconia or more than one kind of these elements on a heat-resistant substrate is arranged on a front stage (a gas inlet side) and another catalyst carrying paradium on a carrier containing oxides of rare earth elements is arranged at a rear stage. With such an arrangement, even gas which is hardly ignited exhibits a superior igniting characteristic at its low temperature and can be stably ignited even at a high temperature. In the case of methane which is most hardly ignited, for example, oxidization of methane is started at a temperature lower than 400°C with the catalyst at the front stage a catalyst temperature layer at the front stage is controlled to be 70°C or below and further controlled to become the temperature range of about 700 to 1000°C at the rear stage catalyst, thereby a stable combustion can be assured.
