Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To raise the detection sensitivity of discrimination of decay, scale, nodule, or bacterial infection of a tooth, i.e., to increase the difference between measurement signals from a healthy tooth range and measurement signals from a decayed tooth range.
SOLUTION: In this method and instrument for discrimination of decay, scale, nodule, or bacterial infection of a tooth, an excited ray 9 is generated at a light source 1, the excited ray 9 is directed to a tooth to be checked to generate fluorescence 10 which is detected and evaluated by a detector 8. A spectrum filter to suppress the fluorescence 9 detected and evaluated by the detector 8 to wavelength larger than about 800 nm is placed in front of the detector 8 to enable the improvement of a decayed tooth range to be evaluated. The irradiation on the tooth to be checked is preferably carried out by excited ray 9 with comparatively long wavelength, for instance 780 nm.
