To obtain a high purity carbon nanotube largely containing monolayer or double-layer carbon nanotubes.
The method of manufacturing the carbon nanotube is based on a synthesis method of carbon nanotube by bringing a carbon-containing compound into contact with a catalyst supported on a carrier at temperatures of 500°C to 1,200°C. In manufacturing methods like this, an oxide is used as a carrier to support catalyst in many cases, but by the method of this invention, an oxide which has been conventionally able to produce only a very small amount of carbon nanotubes, is made able to increase the production of nanotubes, by making the method chracterised in that the cumulative volume of particles having a particle size of 10 μm or smaller occupy 95% or more of the total volume of all particles in particle size distribution of the oxide, and applying pulverizing treatment to the oxide.
