Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide method for manufacturing CMC(carboxymethyl cellulose) alkali metal salt in which a carboxymethyletherification agent is effectively utilized and an aqueous solution obtained is excellently transparent.
SOLUTION: Alkali cellulose is manufactured from cellulosic material with 1.5-5.0 mol alkali metal hydroxide per 1 mol glucose unit in aquous organic solvent, neutralized with organic acid so that amount of alkali metal hydroxide is 0.5-1.5 mol per 1 mol glucose unit and etherificated by adding a carboxymethyletherification agent.
