To provide a method for manufacturing fiber reinforced metal, which method can manufacture a composite material at a required portion even when the density of a reinforcing fiber preform is lower than that of molten metal, and further to provide a fiber reinforced metal material manufactured by the same method.
When the fiber reinforced metal is manufactured by casting, a jig-integrated type preform 11 is manufactured by joining a positioning jig 14 made of metal or ceramic having a melting point higher than the temperature of molten metal to a network shape inclination-preventing metallic basket 13 having reinforcing fiber preforms 12 therein. After preheating the jig-integrated type preform 11, the molten metal of a matrix metal is poured in a state that the jig-integrated type preform 11 is arranged in a metallic die.
