Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a membrane-electrode assembly having an electrode catalyst layer capable of showing a high power generation property even under a condition of low humidification, which enables the enhancement of a water retention property without interfering with the diffusibility of reactive gas, the removal of water resulting from an electrode reaction or the like; and a method for manufacturing such a membrane-electrode assembly.SOLUTION: A membrane-electrode assembly 11 comprises a polymer electrolyte membrane 1 and a pair of electrode catalyst layers 2 and 3 holding the polymer electrolyte membrane therebetween. The pair of electrode catalyst layers 2 and 3 includes a polymer electrolyte and catalyst material-supporting particles. At least one electrode catalyst layer 2 (or 3) is divided into at least two parts including a first electrode catalyst part 2a (or 3a) provided on a gas inlet side and a second electrode catalyst part 2b (or 3b) provided on a gas outlet side. In the at least one electrode catalyst layer thus divided, the second electrode catalyst part is larger than the first electrode catalyst part in the value of the volume of pores having a diameter 1.0 μm or less determined according to conversion based on pore cylinder approximation by a mercury press-in method; the difference therebetween is 0.1-1.0 mL/g.
