PURPOSE: To achieve saving of time and manpower in a measuring work, by measuring light transmittance in exhausted gas, performing specified computation based on the measured value, thereby obtaining the weight concentration of the soot and dust.
CONSTITUTION: A weight concentration coefficient K is determined from the weight percent of residual carbon in the composition of fuel oil. The weight concentration (a) of the soot and dust is measured from the light transmittance T of the exhausted gas by using said weight concentration coefficient K. For example, light projecting and receiving devices 1 and 2 send and receive the light to each other by transmitting the continuously modulated light having a specified frequency in the exhausted gas in a smoke path 3. The received light level is converted into an electric signal, amplified by an amplifier, and sent to an operating part 5. In the operating part 5, the received signal is converted into the signal suitable for the computing process and received in a microcomputer 7. The microcomputer performs computation according to the program stored in advance.
