To provide a melting and casting method with which the quality and the yield can be improved by restraining the vaporization of a magnesium and the development of oxide, etc., caused at the melting time.
This method comprises a melting process, in which at the melting time, a gas stream sealing type vessel 1 is used and this vessel is heated while keeping to inert gas atmosphere in this vessel by making flow-in and flow-out of the inert gas to melt the magnesium or the magnesium alloy, and a casting process, in which in the case of casting the molten metal 3 into a gas stream sealing type mold 4 by using an opening/closing nozzle 2 or a pump, the molten metal is cast into this mold while keeping to the inert gas atmosphere in the mold by making flow-in and flow-out of the inert gas. The flow rate of the above inert gas is preferably 20-500 N liter/min per unit volume (m3) in the vessel and 200-10000 N liter/min in the space part formed in the mold.
