To provide a novel method for coating the surface of a biomedical material, particularly the surface of a product such as a contact lens including an extended-wear contact lens.

The method for coating the surface of a material comprises (a) a step of bonding a polymerization initiator group covalently to the surface of the material, (b) a step of graft polymerizing a vinyl monomer bearing a reactive group onto the surface of the material modified with the initiator thereby preparing a primary polymer coating bearing the reactive group and (c) a step of reacting the reactive group in the primary polymer with a hydrophilic telomer bearing a functional group coreactive with the reactive group in the primary polymer coating.
