PURPOSE: To carry out an expected manual pull-down operation by selecting the maximum speed change ratio from a basic group of a plurality of inference signals indicating necessity of engagement of low speed ratio on the basis of operational parameters, and by engaging a certain speed ratio according to the low speed change ratio selected by a control device.
CONSTITUTION: The transmission comprises an automatic transmission device 14 that provides a plurality of engage-able speed change ratios from the lowest speed change ratio to the highest speed change ratio, and a control device 302 for selecting the speed change ratio to be engaged based on a load. A plurality of inference signals indicating necessity of engagement of the speed change ratio lower than the highest speed change ratio on the basis of various measured operational parameters are generated. The maximum speed change ratio is selected based on the basic group of the inference signals. A certain speed change ratio is engaged according to the maximum speed change ratio and the lower speed change ratio selected by the control device 302. The inference-based control is achieved by a fuzzy logic technique. Parameters influencing the desirability of the manual pull-down operation are measured and estimated, and used to establish an overall measure of operations.
