To provide technology for operating an internal combustion engine, minimizing the exhaustion of nitrogen oxide and particulates from a low partial load region to a full load region while achieving high efficiency.
The combustion of fuel is performed in a first operation region A corresponding to low-to-medium partial load at a local temperature TL below a NOx forming temperature TNOX and at a local air ratio λL over a particulate forming limit λLS. Fuel injection is started in a crank angle range of 50° to 5° before a top dead center of a compression stroke, and exhaust gas is recirculated at an exhaust gas recirculation percentage of about 50% to 70%. The fuel injection in a second operation region B corresponding to medium partial load is started in a crank angle range of about 2° before the top dead center to about 20° after the top dead center.
